The EV Chargepoint Grant currently covers 75% of the cost of a home charger, up to £500, but it’s been restricted to renters, flat owner-occupiers and leaseholders, and landlords installing for tenants since 2022 (the £500 cap itself is an April 2026 increase from £350). Which cable setup fits your driveway?
Tethered means the cable’s fixed to the unit, ready whenever you park up. Untethered gives you a plain socket and you bring your own cable. Speed doesn’t change either way, it’s a straight call between convenience and a tidier-looking install, and whether more than one car in the household needs the point.
7kW is the standard home charging speed across the UK, adding around 25–30 miles of range for every hour on charge. A flat 60kWh battery takes roughly 8–10 hours at that rate, which is why almost everyone charges overnight instead of watching a cable.

Can I charge an EV from my solar panels?
Yes, provided the charger and inverter are set up to work together. A lot of smart chargers can be configured to draw only from surplus solar rather than the grid, topping up automatically whenever the panels are outproducing the house.
Do I need a separate consumer unit or circuit?
A dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit is part of every install. Where the existing unit doesn’t have room for it, we flag that upfront and price in whatever else is needed.
Can I install a charger without off-street parking?
All that’s needed is a safe cable route from house to car that avoids crossing a public footpath. What’s possible for your property gets confirmed at survey.
